UPDATE: September 18, 2006
Tom Deierlein was shot by a sniper in East Baghdad on Saturday, September 9. The bullet entered his left hip and shattered part of his left rear pelvis, sacrum and right rear pelvis. He has full sensation in both legs with some nerve damage to his left leg. He is currently at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Silver Springs, MD. While some of his injuries are significant, he is stable and in good spirits. For the next 3 months he will be involved in physical and neurological rehabilitation before the doctors can begin any reconstructive surgery on his pelvis.
At the time of the assault, Tom, as Civil Affairs officer, was working hard on the focus stabilization of the Sunni area called Adhamiyah (which you may have been reading about in the newspapers). In the 2 weeks prior he'd been focused on improving the schools, hospitals and health clinics as well as the sewage, water and electrical systems of this small part of Baghdad.
You'll start to hear from him in the next couple of weeks as he settles into his rehabilitation and is able to connect to the Internet. He is very thankful for the prayers, love and support that he.s been receiving from both within and outside the industry.
At this time he is only able to accept very limited visitation. Please stay tuned for further updates. If you need to reach him urgently (and briefly) the best times are between 10am and 4pm at 202.782.8895
Many people have asked how to reach out to Tom. To make it easier we
created this site which he and his family can read or check on periodically.

You are a true champion who stepped to the challenge and tried to make a difference not only to the people in Iraq but also to us back in the US who read your emails home. You gave us better insight into the war with an unfiltered view of what was happening in Iraq.
Your actions stand out as a shining example of how to be hero in world where such models are in short supply.

Greetings Tom,
Haven't seen you since sometime in 1989. Thanks to you, I now know what people are talking about when they say throw your hip into it. Bruce Floersheim let me know by e-mail today about your injury. It was terrible news to learn, but reading all of the messages of support and love you have received makes it clear you will recover in short order and continue with great spirit and energy. One of the messages of support made reference to the fact you were planning on running the MWR's 10 mile run in Baghdad in a few weeks. Since I am here in the IZ anyway, I'll run the race in your honor. Take care Tom, may God bless you and give you strength on your path to a speedy and complete recovery.

Tom,
First class reception at Forbes and nice piece on Fox 5. I have been reading all of your correspondence updates, and must say that you are one incredible soldier, going well beyond what is required for the job, taking a personal interst in making things better for those you interact with and having such a great spirit when all your efforts were rewarded in such a cruel and unjust way. You have certainly been an inspiration to me. I look forward to your return to New York with full recovery, however long it takes.
Much to be thankful for!

Tom, your emails to Nathan are shared with me, and I have shipped
boxes of clothing, etc, to you for your humanitarian work in Bagdad.
Our response from the Scarsdale Congregational Church will continue,
thanks to another soldier continuing your project. I have more boxes to take to the post office. Our church community is also active with Operation Support Our Troops projects.
The words THANK YOU TOM seem entirely inadequate, all things considered. Just take excellent care of yourself now,

Tom and Hiwot,
In 2002 I had an almost fatal car accident, most of my bones on the left side of my body were smashed, including my pelvis. I was in the hospital for 5 months and had a long rehab road back. I had to learn to walk again.
One of the most helpful things my family did for me was get a Volunteer Minister from the Church of Scientology to give me regular daily 'assists.'
These guys are trained to work in disaster areas and have been at Ground Zero and the Tsunami sites. Their assists are like magic and they work. You might want to give it a try.
When people meet me now and I tell them I was in a major car accident and couldn't even walk, they find it hard to believe.
I wish you all the best.

Hi Tom,
I was reading a story about you by Laura Coffey today on msnbc.com. I must say I was completley touched by your story. I am in advertising in Dallas, and can only imagine how much your life changed from being in Manhattan to living life in Iraq. My boyfriend was called from the IRR back in September. He was deployed in March and has since been serving in Baghdad in Civil Affairs. From someone close to a soldier, I know how hard it is on you all to serve in such situations that you do. Your generosity with the children in Baghdad is incredible. My boyfriend was a part of the company that recently found the 24 near-death boys in the orphanage, and I know would be proud to hear your story as well.
Thank you for all that you do. You are the type of person that will continue to affect our world for the better.
Best,
Becca.

Tom, our hearts sunk when we heard you were injured and of course buoyed exponentially by the news of your impending recovery. Many of us only know the war and situation in Iraq via the news media. You made it far more personal for us with your emails and phone calls.
You likely could have and understandably opted out of service but you opted not to. Your dignity and commitment set an example for all of us. Your positive attitude, resilience and determination ensure a full recovery for you.
My golf game has been very bad since you have been away so I look forward to skunking some shots and ripping up courses with you very soon. And yes that includes the Trump course we so unceremoniously sneaked onto and played last year. I assure you that we will do it again soon and I look forward to it and may even, in honor of the moment smoke one of your smelly cigars.
I will be down there to visit with you soon. Optimism is a force multiplier. My thoughts are with you.

Hi Tom,
You don't know me however like so many others, I know you. Many can't appreciate what you've done. While in college I lived with Iraqi refugees who were exiled into the US for helping us in Desert Storm. Many of them had gunshot wounds too. They told me, in the most intimate details, the kinds of abuses they endured. I guarantee they appreciate your sacrifices.
You're a hero, even if you're unwilling to admit it. My brother is a firefighter in NY and he won't succumb to hero status either.
What you've done is legend building. People will talk, right or wrong, about the soldier who wouldn't quit and how he preferred holding potential combatant hands over heaving grenades. Such acts are based on Godly principles and should never go unnoticed.
I just moved to DC a week ago. I'm setting up a place in Alexandria right near 495. If you need anything...don't hesitate to ask. I believe that those who've been given a lot have proportionate requirements to give. I think you've earned more than your fair share of favors.
Feel free to get in touch.

Hi Tom,
We got the news on the afternoon of Monday September 11, the opening day of the iMedia Brand Summit at Lake Las Vegas. It quickly spread throughout the evening conversation and by Tuesday a.m., everyone had heard you had been shot, but were coming home. You're service and commitment have made all of us that have known you, proud to call you our friend and associate. I can tell you, that the concern and pride that people all over this industry have demonstrated has been so widespread and from the heart. There are lots of people in this business that love you dearly, Tom and that was clear in their eyes and their applause at the Tuesday a.m. session when we shared the news with all 400 attendees. Maybe most impressive, is the people that have not known you personally, but have been made aware of your service at the Summits and have come to know who you are. It makes me feel good about the people who are in this business these days. Several of us talked about that this week - the quality of people that represent the leadership of this business today. Soon, you will rejoin that group and we are all looking forward to when that happens. In the meantime, we are here to support you in any way we can, financially, emotionally and otherwise. You are in all of our thougths and prayers. We hope you mend quickly and can return to your family, friends and associates soon. We love you TD - I hope to see you soon.

Tom,
I just read your entire story on MSNBC in total awe and respect. With tears welling, I type my thanks and appreciation to a true American hero. Your story has touched my heart and inspired me to be a better person. I was saddened to read that your wife had left you....I hope she knows she will never find someone with the giving heart, spirit and amazing tenacity that you embody. You deserve to be adored and honored for the great person you have become. Thank you for your service and your non-stop dedication to those in need.

you dumb sonofabitch! Not to be outdone and always exceeding the standards, you should know that you didn't need to go to that extreme to get a Purple Heart.
Your leadership legacy will continue in the drive of your soldiers as well as your soldier's soldiers in the future. You can be sure that you have enriched the lives of countless soldiers & those left behind are more capable and more tactically proficient because of you.
Now hurry up and get your ass better, so I can kick it!

Hi Tom!
You are an inspiration to all of us. You have such a possitive attitude. I compete for the U.S. in a crazy sport called skeleton. Just before the Olympics last season I was involved in an accident and was injured. Not anywhere close to your injury---I had a compound tib/fib. It could have been much worse for me as it could have for you. God was with us both and still is. I just want you to know that physical therapy will--one day :)--be over. Hang in there. Thanks for being such a wonderful representitive of the United States and example to me.

Thank you for your service for our country and the citizens of Iraq. I pray for your speedy and non-eventful recovery. While you were making a difference in setting up new ideas and structures in Iraq you also made a difference here too. Your emails really helped folks like me and other office dwelling, mainly urban well-off advertising people to understand this war and the people of Iraq better than any news coverage. Whenever I read one of your emails I couldn't help but think how lucky I was to be an American but also how much more I could be doing to pay back some of that good fortune. I really admire and appreciate that you have put your heart (and hip) on the line to serve others. Feel better soon.

I hope your efforts over there live on through another soldier, another mission, and that we complete this mission successfully, and sooner that it looks like we will.
My wishes for a quick recovery for you and a speedy return to your family and your old life, as close as you can get to it at least.

Tom,
While most folks were sad to hear about your injury, I was very glad. Don't get me wrong, I hope you have a speedy and full recovery. However, I know that being injured means two things. First, since it did not seem to be life threatening, you will survive this (expletives deleted) war. As you well know, many don't and I, as well as many others, feared the worst. And second, it meant that you would be coming home sooner that you had expected. Yes, it's not in the same way that you had hoped but you are back!
So, now your orders are to get well and rejoin all those who have missed you these many months.

Tom, I am sorry that I can not personally empathise with the efforts or the sacrifices you have made in your support of our administration's efforts in Iraq, an unnecessary war that has cost our country dearly in terms of personal injuries, deaths and the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraq citizens and the millions who have left the country and the international regard for our beloved country and.... I was about to go on stating the real negative facts that our invasion has caused. But you have heard everything that I could bring up to support my views that we shouldn't be there before from others, haven't you? That the billions and trillions should have been spent at home for our families and children. I am entitled to my views, Tom, as you are to yours. I live in our United States. I voted against President Bush in 2000 and 2004. I didn't believe he had the integrity or the intelligence to lead us into the 21st century. Tom, I thank you for your service to our country. Tom,
I just happened to start reading some of the story about you on MSNBC.com and had to keep reading, it was so encouraging, touching, and an example of an impressive guy who makes a difference. To see that your time over there ended with you being shot produced a hurt, sadness, and some anger inside as if I knew you personally. We as a country, and I as an American, owe you for your contribution and sacrifice - but a debt that is mainly addressed through our actions to show how much we respect your and others service since there is no way it can ever be repaid. I hope you are making quick and encouraging strides in your recovery. Please know, and I'm sure I am not alone, your service and story is an inspiration and has had a positive impact on me after such a brief encounter with who you are. Be strong, stay focused on the things in life that really matter, and know you're appreciated.

Tom:
I am so sorry you got shot, but glad you are back in the States to recover. You should be very proud of all the good work you were able to accomplish while you were there.
I am just down the road from Reed, so if you or anyone in your family needs anything, pick up the phone and give me a call or drop a note and I'll take care of it for you. (202.431.1446 ccampbel@ngs.org)
Good luck for a quick and painfree recovery. You will be in our prayers.

Hello Tom - I just read about you on e-marketer. I'm an army brat and live in DC. I've been working with a lot of the Dynamic Logic data that we subscribe to lately and when I saw DL in the headline of an email newsletter, I learned about you. My Dad's a veteran of Korea and Vietnam so I particularly appreciate the sacrifice you've made. I trust they are taking good care of you at Walter Reed! I've been there on several occassions with my Dad and seen many of our 'guys' in rehab...it's humbling to say the least. Since I'm a 'neighbor' while you're rehabing at WR, feel free to call on me. I work at NAA and my number is 703-902-1860.
